HIV can hide inside a person's cells as "reservoirs" of dormant virus. These reservoirs persist despite treatment and are the main barrier to a cure.
- Fields
Microbiology & Immunology
Medicine & Clinical Research
- Topics
HIV reservoir
HIV cure
latent HIV
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Apr 2031
What they work on
- Support investigators' ability to measure HIV replication, infectivity and how easily cells become infected, through shared virology assays.
- Provide HIV reservoir characterization tools, including the Quantitative Viral Outgrowth Assay, the Intact Proviral DNA Assay, integration-site sequencing and clonality analysis of infected cells.
- Expand HIV research capacity through training and collaboration, including support for antibody neutralization studies.
More about the research
Studying them requires specialized lab tests that many research groups cannot run on their own. This Virology Core, part of the Columbia University–Weill Cornell Medicine Center for AIDS Research, provides those tools and expertise to HIV investigators.
Why it matters
By giving HIV researchers access to specialized assays for measuring hidden viral reservoirs and antibody neutralization, the Core could speed progress toward curative strategies and better treatments for people living with HIV. It also supports the center's broader goal of ending the HIV epidemic.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.

Determine how long virus takes to rebound after stopping antiretroviral therapy in rhesus macaques given defined reservoirs of 5x10^4, 1x10^4, 1x10^3 or 1x10^2 laboratory-generated, latently SIV-infected autologous cells.

Show that brain-penetrating AAV can deliver cargo to astrocytes and neurons that then relay it to untouched microglia, using PEG10- and syncytin-A-based endogenous retrovirus-like particles carrying Cre messenger RNA in LoxP-STOP-LoxP tdTomato reporter mice that turn red when edited.
James Whitney
Boston College, MA·Microbiology & Immunology
Determine how early the persistent viral reservoir is established after SIV infection and how initiating antiretroviral therapy early limits seeding and expansion of cellular reservoirs.
