Saltanat Childress
University of Texas at Arlington, TX·Public Health & Epidemiology·Early-career
Child maltreatment, exposure to domestic violence, and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) damage the wellbeing of children, families and whole communities. The burden is heaviest for families in low- and middle-income countries, and the issue is also relevant for immigrant and refugee families in the U.S.

What they work on
- Adapt three evidence-based programs, Multiple Family Groups, School Children and Their Families, and financial economic empowerment, to the culture and needs of families in Kyrgyzstan using a community-engaged approach with local partners.
- Pilot the combined MFG+SAF+FEE package in a randomized trial to test whether it improves child and family wellbeing more than the individual programs would.
- Assess the combined prevention program qualitatively, using mixed-method measures to understand how families experience it and how it might be refined for wider use.
More about the research
Several prevention programs work well on their own in the U.S. and other countries. However, they have never been adapted for and rigorously tested in Central Asian populations, and they have never been combined in a single study.
Why it matters
Children and families in Kyrgyzstan who are at risk of maltreatment and domestic violence could benefit from a prevention program fitted to their culture that tackles family stress, parenting and money worries together. If the combined approach works, it could also inform prevention efforts in other global settings and for Central Asian immigrant and refugee families in the U.S.
