Factories are becoming connected computers. Internet of Things sensors, artificial intelligence (AI) and networked machines allow custom products to be made where and when they are needed, an approach called smart manufacturing.

What they work on
- Build a web infrastructure of virtual playgrounds where researchers share data, code and tools for studying cyberattacks on smart manufacturing machines and networks.
- Curate diverse cybersecurity datasets from smart manufacturing systems into a shared data infrastructure that supports development of AI-driven defenses.
- Connect researchers to real manufacturing equipment through a machine infrastructure that draws on national resources such as the Department of Energy's Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform.
- Enable research on forensics and watermarking of manufacturing machines, protection against process-specific side-channel leaks, and fingerprinting and securing factory networks.
More about the research
That connectivity also opens new cybersecurity risks. IBM has identified manufacturing networks as the largest target for cyberattacks among all industry sectors. Manufacturing experts and cybersecurity experts have traditionally worked apart, and researchers lack shared data, tools and machines for studying how factories can be attacked and defended.
Why it matters
Smart factories link many manufacturers, designers and businesses, and they have become a major target for cyberattacks. Shared data, tools and machines could help researchers and practitioners better understand current and emerging threats to these systems. The platform could also speed the development of defenses that keep manufacturing networks secure.
