What they work on

  1. Identify barriers to and facilitators of joining diabetes self-management programs among Mexican-origin Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes and their healthcare providers, to guide the design of an online intervention.
  2. Adapt the bilingual, in-person On the Road to Living Well with Diabetes (OTR) program, led by community health workers, into an online digital health intervention, drawing on what patients and providers report.
  3. Test in a three-group randomized study whether the online OTR program matches the in-person program, and beats a control, at improving diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy, diabetes stress and HbA1c (average blood sugar).

More about the research

Hispanic Americans carry an outsized share of the burden: they are more likely to develop the disease, and to develop it younger, and they have higher rates of diabetes-related kidney failure and vision loss than non-Hispanic whites. Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs teach patients to manage their own disease, and they lower the risk of complications, hospital stays and death. Yet few patients use them, partly because in-person sessions are inconvenient or hard to reach.

Why it matters

If the online version proves as effective as in-person classes, it could be shared widely with Mexican-origin Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes. That includes rural and home-bound people who cannot easily attend sessions. Wider access to diabetes self-management education could improve patients' ability to manage their disease and may reduce complications and hospitalizations in a population at high risk of kidney failure and vision loss.
