What they work on
- Document current understandings, policies and practices for using and teaching AI literacy in partner middle school districts in Texas and New York, working with teachers and technology coaches.
- Identify the key AI literacies every middle school student should learn, aligned with district curriculum goals and the AI4K12 framework.
- Design and pilot browser-based software tools and lessons that integrate AI concepts into science, language arts and social studies, and study how they deepen learning.
More about the research
Understanding how AI works is increasingly seen as a new form of computational thinking that everyone needs. The AI4K12 framework outlines which AI ideas students should learn, but many teachers are not yet prepared to teach these ideas in everyday middle school classes. This collaborative project explores how to build both using AI and understanding AI into core middle school subjects: science, language arts and social studies.
Why it matters
The project could give schools nationwide practical guidance and tested classroom materials for teaching AI literacy within regular middle school subjects. Teachers would be better prepared to help all students use AI wisely and understand how it works.
