The ocean is vast and changes constantly. Scientists studying it depend on long-running networks of instruments that measure the water, the seafloor and the air above.

- Topics
oceanography

ocean observing systems
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Sep 2029
What they work on
- Organize community workshops that form new science user groups and multidisciplinary collaborations around Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) ocean, seafloor and atmospheric data.
- Run summer school workshops for STEM workforce training and town hall sessions at major oceanographic conferences to expand use of OOI data.
- Manage communications, outreach and board engagement so the OOI Facility Board can give independent input on observatory operations and relay community feedback.
More about the research
The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is one such network, with instrument arrays at coastal and open-ocean sites. It collects, archives and shares ocean, marine geophysical and atmospheric data with researchers. This grant does not fund a research project with its own hypothesis. It funds the Administrative Support Office of the OOI Facility Board, which gives independent input on how OOI is managed and run.
Why it matters
By bringing in new users and supporting training workshops, the office aims to make sure OOI's coastal and global ocean data reach more of the scientists and educators who study the oceans, seafloor and atmosphere. Broader, well-informed use of these data could support new ocean science discoveries and better-informed oversight of the observatory.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
