Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 28. Latine adolescents and young adults have disproportionately high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, yet they are underrepresented in suicide research.

What they work on
- Chart the longitudinal trajectories of suicidal thoughts and behaviors from age 10 to 28 in 674 Mexican-origin youth from the California Families Project.
- Test how depression, anxiety and substance use predict the starting level and rate of change of suicidal thoughts and behaviors across development.
- Determine whether cultural factors, including ethnic pride and familismo (a strong commitment to family), offset or soften the impact of clinical symptoms on suicide risk trajectories.
More about the research
This project asks how these thoughts and behaviors change from childhood into young adulthood in Mexican-origin youth. It also asks which clinical symptoms raise risk and which cultural strengths protect against it.
Why it matters
Latine youth face high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors but have few interventions designed for them. By identifying when risk rises, which symptoms drive it and which cultural strengths protect against it, this work could inform culturally responsive, age-appropriate suicide prevention programs. Such programs may help reduce suicide disparities among Mexican-origin and other Latine youth.
