Measurement-based care (MBC) means regularly measuring a patient's symptoms during therapy and using the results to guide treatment. It is considered an evidence-based practice in mental health care.

What they work on
- Define and evaluate the full range of measurement-based care (MBC) fidelity domains using digital system usage data, self-report, and observer ratings from the COMET trial in community clinics.
- Use Item Response Theory measurement models to test the reliability, validity, and dimensionality of MBC fidelity indicators across sessions, youth, clinicians, and clinics.
- Assess how MBC fidelity affects youth and caregiver alliance and engagement, Unified Protocol mechanisms, and youth symptom and functioning outcomes rated by youth, caregivers, and independent evaluators.
- Evaluate whether pragmatic indicators, such as digital usage data and clinician self-report, can serve as proxy measures of MBC fidelity.
More about the research
But in community mental health centers, clinicians often deliver it incompletely, a problem called low fidelity, and that weakens its benefits. Which parts of MBC actually matter for helping young people get better? Answering this could show clinics where to focus.
Why it matters
Young people treated in community mental health centers for anxiety, depression, and related emotional problems may benefit more if clinicians deliver the most important parts of measurement-based care. Pinpointing those parts, and finding cheap ways to track them, could guide training and implementation strategies that make routine youth mental health care more effective.
