What they work on
- Test whether students in schools using CLS-A-FUERTE, a school clinician training and ADHD/ODD intervention program, improve more in parent- and teacher-rated symptoms than students receiving usual services, in a cluster randomized trial across 40 Mexican schools.
- Measure whether school clinicians deliver the chosen program components with fidelity, and whether teachers and families engage in and stick with the strategies.
- Test whether improvements in parenting behaviors and in teacher or school clinician competency explain the sustained effects of the intervention.
- Identify barriers and facilitators to keeping the program going, relating cost estimates, participant satisfaction and school characteristics to continued activities at follow-up.
- Build clinical research capacity at a new university site by training emerging investigators in coursework, evidence-based treatment skills and program training.
More about the research
Most affected children worldwide never receive treatments shown to work. In Mexico, about 7% of youth have ADHD and 10% have ODD. This project asks whether training school clinicians to deliver a proven program can bring effective care to many schools and keep it running over time.
Why it matters
Untreated ADHD and ODD harm children's lives and cost society hundreds of billions of dollars each year. This trial could show how schools in high-need settings like Mexico can deliver evidence-based behavioral treatment at scale and sustain it. Its findings could guide similar clinician training programs in other countries with limited mental health services.
