Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens, known as sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth, face much higher risk of sexual and intimate partner violence than other teens. They also suffer worse long-term health effects, such as poor mental health and suicidal thoughts.

What they work on

  1. Estimate the causal effect of state anti-SGM and SGM-affirming laws adopted from 2021 to 2025 on sexual and intimate partner violence among SGM youth, using difference-in-differences analysis of Youth Risk Behavior Survey data.
  2. Test whether a state's social climate around SGM stigma softens or amplifies the effects of these laws on violence risk among SGM youth.
  3. Explore how state SGM policies and social climate influence violence risk, using qualitative interviews with providers in three states with high, medium and low adoption of affirming laws.

More about the research

Racial and ethnic minority SGM youth face even greater risk. Since 2021, U.S. states have adopted about 170 laws restricting SGM rights, while other states have passed laws protecting them. This project asks whether these state laws, and the level of anti-SGM stigma in a state, change young people's risk of violence.

Why it matters

Few proven violence-prevention approaches address why SGM youth are at higher risk. Evidence on how anti-SGM and SGM-affirming laws affect sexual and dating violence could guide state policymakers, advocates and prevention programs. The goal is to better protect LGBTQ teens, including racial and ethnic minority youth.
