What they work on
- Correlate genomic alterations with the growth and progression of precursor cells in human PanIN samples, using 3D tissue reconstruction, multi-region whole exome sequencing and evolutionary reconstruction.
- Map immune and stromal (support) cell subsets across multiple regions of the same 3D-reconstructed PanINs with imaging mass cytometry, and link microenvironment features to the molecular changes in nearby PanIN cells.
- Characterize the immune response to PanIN regions by integrating predicted neoantigens, mutant protein fragments the immune system can recognize, with T-cell receptor sequencing.
More about the research
It grows out of small, non-invasive precursor lesions that can be cured if they are found and treated early. The most common of these precursors is pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN). Understanding what pushes a harmless PanIN toward cancer is therefore central to early detection and prevention.
Why it matters
Pancreatic cancer is usually found late, but its precursor lesions are curable when caught early. Learning whether gene mutations or the surrounding immune and support cells push PanINs toward cancer could guide new early-detection tests and prevention strategies. This could help people at risk of pancreatic cancer.
