Immunology shapes public debates about infectious disease, vaccination and even climate change. Yet its terms are complex, the field changes every year, and many biology instructors outside immunology feel unprepared to teach it.

What they work on
- Develop interdisciplinary immunology lesson plans that link immune concepts to microbiology, genetics, ecology, evolution, physiology and chemistry, using backward design and active learning strategies.
- Pair less experienced immunology instructors with experienced immunology educators to implement and assess the new teaching resources across diverse institutions and disciplines.
- Identify a shared cross-disciplinary language for immune literacy based on the Vision and Change report and the AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and share the products through the ImmunoReach QUBES hub and symposiums.
More about the research
This project asks how to make immune literacy, a working understanding of how the immune system functions, accessible beyond immunology-specific classrooms.
Why it matters
Clearer, tested immunology lessons could help college biology instructors at many kinds of institutions teach immune concepts with confidence. Students could then gain a better understanding of vaccination, infectious disease and other societal issues, which in turn supports public understanding of these topics.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
