Western Michigan University, MI·Education Research
Teaching methods that put students at the center of the classroom, and that are backed by research evidence, increase learning, retention and equity in undergraduate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses. Yet these methods are still not standard practice at U.S.

What they work on
- Synthesize research published from 2010 to 2021 on instructional interventions in undergraduate STEM and social science courses, using a framework synthesis approach to identify themes and advances in instructional change.
- Determine which change efforts support student learning of STEM content, drawing on a literature search designed around current best practice in synthesis methods.
- Test the reliability of AI-assisted thematic coding of the instructional change literature by comparing it directly against human qualitative coding of the same studies.
More about the research
colleges and universities, and the change efforts most commonly used have not made them the norm. Taking stock of what a decade of such efforts has produced could guide departments and institutions toward instructional change that lasts.
Why it matters
Faculty, departments and institutions trying to spread research-based instruction could use this synthesis to choose change strategies supported by evidence, so that more undergraduates experience teaching known to improve learning, retention and equity. The comparison of AI-assisted and human coding may also show how far AI tools can be relied on in systematic reviews.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
