Nova Southeastern University, FL·Education Research

Undergraduates learn science best by doing it, and hands-on research boosts their performance and persistence in STEM. Traditional one-on-one lab apprenticeships, however, reach relatively few students and have historically favored majority-group students.

Grants

What they work on

  1. Identify the supports for and barriers to implementing and sustaining the BASIL biochemistry CURE across institution types, using faculty surveys, implementation plans and semi-structured interviews.
  2. Characterize how institutional context, such as demographics, size, location, cost and faculty workload, relates to differences in how the CURE is implemented.
  3. Facilitate CURE implementation and sustainability at 50 new campuses, focusing on Minority-Serving Institutions and community colleges, through training workshops and faculty mentoring.

More about the research

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) build real research into regular lab courses, reaching many more students at lower cost. This collaborative project studies how CUREs are adopted, carried out and sustained across different kinds of colleges.

Why it matters

Students at Minority-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Community Colleges could gain broader access to authentic biochemistry research in their regular courses. Evidence on what helps and hinders CURE adoption could guide faculty and institutions in sustaining these courses, which may help strengthen a diverse STEM and medical workforce.

Nia Bauer

Arapahoe Community College, CO·Education Research

Develop course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) of variable length for biology courses and labs and for three non-biology courses, with a shared repository of curricula for in-person, hybrid and remote teaching.

Rebecca Hunter

College of New Jersey, NJ·Education Research

Apply the Teacher-Centered Systemic Reform framework, which treats instructional beliefs, practices, personal and contextual factors as drivers of change, as a diagnostic tool to characterize each institution's barriers to adopting the networked chemistry CURE.

Ross Stites

Kansas City Kansas Community College, KS·Education Research

Increase the number of STEM courses at a two-year college that use course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), in which an entire class carries out authentic research as part of the course.
