Christopher Newport University, VA·Education Research
Small colleges focused on undergraduate teaching often lack the staff and structures to build lasting partnerships with industry. As a result, their students have fewer chances to take part in internships and industry research in fast-growing technology fields.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Sep 2027
What they work on
- Identify best practices from successful model institutions for building and sustaining partnerships between primarily undergraduate institutions and industry.
- Create or expand a centralized organizational structure at each of three partner colleges to manage industry and research partnerships.
- Pilot industry partnerships in data science, artificial intelligence and biotechnology to find sustainable models that give undergraduates internships and research experience.
- Disseminate partnership models to other primarily undergraduate institutions to strengthen workforce pipelines in emerging technology fields.
More about the research
This grant is not a laboratory research project. It is an institutional capacity-building effort shared by Christopher Newport University, Champlain College and Western Oregon University. Together the three institutions span the Mid-Atlantic, New England and the Pacific Northwest.
Why it matters
The project could expand internships and industry research opportunities in data science, AI and biotechnology for undergraduates at teaching-focused colleges, including students underrepresented in STEM. Partnership models that other primarily undergraduate institutions can reuse may strengthen regional technology workforces.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
