What they work on

  1. Describe current patterns of alcohol use and misuse among U.S. Hispanic women using complex survey analysis of three national datasets.
  2. Explore how drinking-related sex role expectations from traditional Hispanic culture and mainstream U.S. culture shape drinking or abstaining, through qualitative discussions with Hispanic women in the U.S.
  3. Develop survey items for a new measure of bicultural sex role expectations around drinking, based on themes from the qualitative discussions, to be validated in a later national sample.

More about the research

Women are more likely than men to develop alcohol-related cirrhosis (liver scarring) and brain damage from drinking. Hispanic women may also be less likely than non-Hispanic White women to seek treatment. The gap in drinking between Hispanic men and women is narrowing, and young Hispanic women are drinking more hazardously. Yet little current national research focuses on the more than 30 million Hispanic girls and women in the U.S.

Why it matters

Hispanic women in the U.S. may be increasingly at risk for alcohol-related harms such as liver cirrhosis and brain damage, and may be less likely to seek treatment. Up-to-date national data and a culturally grounded measure of drinking-related gender expectations could inform culturally tailored alcohol prevention and treatment programs for this group.
