People at high risk of suicide differ greatly from one another, and the factors driving one person's risk can shift over time. Yet most treatments for suicidal thoughts assume the same approach works for everyone.

What they work on

  1. Refine the personalized suicide prevention intervention PRECISE using a user-centered design approach and a case series with high-risk adults.
  2. Test in a randomized controlled trial whether high-intensity personalization, with eight weeks of ecological momentary assessment and repeated single-person network models, reduces suicidal ideation more than low-intensity personalization.
  3. Test whether gains in emotion-regulation skills and reductions in negative affect explain the decrease in suicidal ideation, with assessments at baseline, 8 weeks and 32 weeks.

More about the research

This project asks whether treatment can be tailored to each person by tracking their daily experiences and mapping what drives their suicidal thoughts.

Why it matters

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. One-size-fits-all treatments may miss what drives an individual's suicidal thoughts. A data-driven, personalized intervention could make suicide prevention for at-risk adults more effective and efficient. It would do this by targeting each person's own drivers of distress with proven Safety Planning and Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills.
