What they work on
- Pair early-career faculty and postdoctoral fellows at teaching-intensive institutions with tenured mentors at research-intensive institutions to carry out research on families at key developmental transitions.
- Provide participating scholars with library resources, statistical and survey software, and mentoring on research development, proposal writing and grant management to increase their research productivity.
- Build a supportive scholarly community that brings mentees and mentors together to share learning and develop strategies for career success in developmental science.
More about the research
This collaborative project aims to close that gap for developmental scientists, who study how people and families change across life stages. It pairs early-career scholars at teaching-intensive institutions with tenured mentors at research-intensive institutions who work in similar areas. Pairs will carry out research projects on families at key developmental transitions. These projects will consider the family, financial and other factors that shape those stages. Scholars will also receive library access, statistical and survey software, and mentoring on proposal writing and grant management. A supportive scholarly community will bring participants together to share learning and build strategies for success. The project expects to increase research productivity among these scholars and to strengthen the developmental science workforce.
Why it matters
Developmental scientists at teaching-focused universities could become more productive researchers through better access to mentors, software and grant-writing support. That, in turn, could expand the research done on how families handle key developmental transitions and the financial and family factors that affect them.
