Asthma is common among urban teenagers and causes frequent symptoms, emergency care visits and missed school. Yet few asthma programs have been tested with adolescents, and only one of those is web-based, even though technology is central to teens' lives.

What they work on

  1. Test in a randomized trial of 370 New York City high school students whether CAMP Air, a seven-module web-based asthma program, improves Asthma Control Test scores and reduces urgent care visits over one year compared with asthma education.
  2. Measure whether CAMP Air improves self-care skills, controller medication use, lung function measured by spirometry, quality of life, school attendance and nighttime symptoms in teens with uncontrolled asthma.
  3. Estimate CAMP Air's cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and per symptom-free day from societal and payer perspectives, using a decision-analytic Markov model of health states.
  4. Identify school-, family- and student-level factors that affect delivery of CAMP Air, using RE-AIM and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) process evaluations, to plan its wider rollout.

More about the research

Research on asthma programs also rarely asks whether a program is worth its cost or what it takes to deliver it in real settings. This project addresses those treatment and research gaps.

Why it matters

Urban adolescents with poorly controlled asthma could benefit from a school-based web program that teaches them to manage their own condition, with the goal of better asthma control and fewer urgent care visits and missed school days. Cost-effectiveness results could tell schools and payers whether the program offers good value. Implementation findings could guide how to deliver CAMP Air in high schools on a larger scale.
