Land use connects many of society's biggest problems: food production, water supply, wildfire risk, infrastructure, energy development and rural livelihoods. The choices people make about farmland, forests and built areas shape both the environment and human well-being across the globe.

- Grants
- 2 known grants, through Aug 2027
What they work on
- Coordinate land system science worldwide through the Global Land Programme office by setting research agendas, leading synthesis of place-based case studies, and supporting core methods in modeling, monitoring and case study research.
- Generate knowledge that decision-makers can act on, by engaging with stakeholders through GLP working groups and nodal offices to learn their needs and to inform science-based land policy.
- Develop practical tools that use satellite data, artificial intelligence and geospatial mapping to track changes in farmland, forests, water systems and built environments, and to assess resource pressures and land-use tradeoffs.
- Build modular training, mentoring and entrepreneurship pathways for early-career land system scientists, including scholars from the Global South and from marginalized communities.
More about the research
Land system science studies these choices and their effects. These two grants support the Global Land Programme (GLP), an international research network that brings land system scientists together. The grants fund its coordination office and its newer role as a U.S.-hosted hub for land system tools and training.
Why it matters
Better tools for tracking land-use change could help farmers, natural resource managers, infrastructure planners and policymakers. They could support decisions about agriculture, water, wildfire risk and energy development. Linking land system research to stakeholder needs and global policy discussions may make land-use systems more sustainable and resilient. Training programs prepare scientists to apply these methods in government, industry and research.
