Much modern cancer research depends on measuring and sorting individual cells, for example picking out a rare tumor or immune cell from millions of others by the proteins it carries. Flow cytometry does this by passing cells one at a time through lasers, and related methods add imaging or metal-tagged antibodies.

Grants
2 known grants, through Mar 2030

What they work on

  1. Provide cancer center investigators with flow cytometry, mass cytometry, imaging cytometry and cell sorting services using instruments such as the Helios mass cytometer, ImageStream imaging cytometer and Aria high-speed sorters.
  2. Support mass cytometry studies with a repository of more than 600 custom metal-tagged antibodies, cell staining services and large-dataset analysis, along with training through classes and workshops.
  3. Oversee the cancer center's six shared resources, including genomics, small animal imaging and translational pathology, through advisory committees, user feedback and instrument acquisition.

More about the research

These two grants are not research projects. They support shared core facilities at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center that provide these technologies and other services to many cancer research labs.

Why it matters

These facilities give cancer researchers subsidized access to cell analysis, cell sorting, genomics, imaging and other specialized services. That access supports basic, clinical, translational and population studies aimed at preventing and treating cancer. The grants describe facility support rather than an independent research program, so students should treat this as a core facility rather than a research lab.

Closest labs

Karen Creswell

Georgetown University, DC·Microbiology & Immunology

Provide flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting to cancer center members at two sites, sorting cells by transfection markers, stem cell panels and surface or internal markers for functional and molecular follow-up studies.

Zuhair Ballas

University of Iowa, IA·Medicine & Clinical Research

Provide cancer researchers with high-speed cell sorting, multi-parameter analysis and purification of specific cell subsets for basic and translational studies at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nicholas Ambulos

University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD·Medicine & Clinical Research

Coordinate seven cancer center shared services, including Flow Cytometry, Genomics, Imaging and Biostatistics, alongside the medical school's core facilities so that services are not duplicated.
