What they work on
- Examine how controversial social and political issues emerge and create conflict in families that include a socially marginalized family member.
- Determine how age, generational context and family role (grandparent, parent, grandchild) shape how relatives interact and address conflict, using qualitative interviews with 90 people in 30 three-generation family systems.
- Identify the strategies family members use to navigate disagreements, comparing accounts from multiple members of the same family to inform interventions that support dialogue and social support.
More about the research
This project asks how contentious social issues come up and cause conflict in family life, and what strategies family members use to deal with them.
Why it matters
The findings could point to practical interventions that help family members of different generations talk across disagreements. They could also help families keep supporting one another, especially families with a socially marginalized member who may depend on that support.
