Medical College of Wisconsin, WI·Education Research
Medical students practice clinical skills in simulated patient encounters, but the feedback they need to improve often arrives weeks later, after graders have worked through stacks of notes by hand. That delay blunts the value of an expensive exercise.

What they work on
- Assess the commercial translation potential of a simulation feedback platform through I-Corps customer discovery with medical schools, residency programs, colleges of pharmacy and physician associate training programs.
- Incorporate artificial intelligence into the grading of student patient care notes so that feedback on this currently manual, unreliable step is consistent and immediate across all students.
- Refine data capture, analysis, benchmarking, visualization and individualized reporting for a complex OSCE in which students demonstrate 13 AAMC core professional activities to 14 evaluators, to guide performance improvement and remediation.
More about the research
This project examines whether a software platform that captures simulation data and returns immediate, performance-based feedback can be moved out of one medical school and into wider use.
Why it matters
Medical schools and residency programs need reliable ways to confirm that graduates are ready to care for patients unsupervised. A platform that turns simulation data into immediate, consistent feedback could reduce the staff effort and weeks-long delays of current clinical skills exams, help identify students who need remediation before they begin independent practice, and extend the same approach to pharmacy and physician associate training.
