Grants

What they work on

  1. Develop adaptive mechanisms that tune nonlinear oscillators to stay near critical transitions between motion patterns. Use modeling, stability analysis and numerical continuation to find how this affects sensitivity, memory and robustness.
  2. Build nonlinear mechanical beams with adaptive control and characterize their critical dynamics using laser-based vibration measurement, strain sensing and high-speed imaging.
  3. Test whether networks of criticality-tracking oscillators improve memory, temporal signal processing, classification and prediction compared with fixed-parameter and conventional adaptive oscillator approaches.
  4. Assess the commercial translation potential of a resonance-tracking vibration energy harvester that captures power from vibration sources whose frequency changes, through I-Corps industry discovery.

More about the research

Ambient vibrations from machinery, vehicles and buildings also carry energy that is mostly wasted. This lab studies adaptive nonlinear oscillators, vibrating systems whose behavior is more complex than a simple spring and that can retune their own parameters over time. It explores two uses: as computers built into physical structures, and as harvesters that turn shifting vibrations into electricity.

Why it matters

Physical systems that compute with their own dynamics could support energy-efficient artificial intelligence built directly into robots, structures and sensors. Possible uses include adaptive robotics, structural and environmental monitoring, smart infrastructure and autonomous sensing. Harvesters that capture energy from vibrations whose frequency shifts could make more ambient vibration usable as electricity and increase renewable energy use.
