How do families, jobs, income, migration and aging shape the health of people in the United States, and why do health gaps between groups open or widen? Answering these questions takes large, consistent population data that researchers can actually use.

Grants

What they work on

  1. Expand IPUMS CPS, a harmonized data resource built from the Current Population Survey, by adding more than eight million person records from 65 new monthly and supplement files released between 2021 and 2026.
  2. Improve CPS data and metadata to support reproducible research. Let users choose which CPS data are linked and the formats they receive.
  3. Upgrade IPUMS CPS processing tools to deliver new data faster and lower long-term costs, and grow the user community through outreach, support and training.
  4. Support Life Course Center research on how social contexts and cumulative life experiences shape disparities in later-life functioning, disability, mortality and well-being among disadvantaged, minority, rural and sexual minority populations.
  5. Run pilot grant programs and the Network for Data-Intensive Research on Aging, which introduces scholars to new big population data sources for life course research on aging.

More about the research

The work described here builds and supports that data infrastructure. It also supports a research center that uses population data to study aging across the life course.

Why it matters

Timely, easy-to-use population data allow researchers and policymakers to study health inequities, child and family well-being, and aging using sound evidence. This includes evaluating social safety net policies and how job loss affects families. Research on older adults could inform policies and care practices that improve later-life health and reduce disparities for disadvantaged, minority, rural and sexual minority groups.
