What they work on

  1. Evaluate current postpartum care models, including Fourth Trimester Care (4TM) with its two-week first visit, using quantitative electronic health record data from local health care sites.
  2. Identify barriers and facilitators to postpartum care through focus groups and in-depth interviews with patients, clinicians and staff.
  3. Co-develop with EMBRACE Center community partners a postpartum care model that joins well-child-visit maternal screening with 4TM, and test whether it increases uptake of postpartum care.
  4. Pilot an intervention that addresses postpartum financial stress, and measure patient satisfaction and clinical and implementation outcomes over multiple years.

More about the research

In Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, members of these communities are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than in 97% of comparable cities. About 80% of maternal deaths are preventable, and 65% happen after birth, in the postpartum period. This makes care after delivery a key place to save lives. Current postpartum care has three main problems. It has gaps at the moments of highest risk, it was not designed with community input, and money troubles keep many people from attending visits.

Why it matters

Many maternal deaths occur after birth and could be prevented. A postpartum care model shaped by community input, with earlier visits and attention to financial barriers, could increase use of care and catch warning signs sooner. Birthing people in at-risk communities would benefit most. The development process could also serve as a blueprint for other health systems.
