Just microseconds after the Big Bang, the universe was filled with quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this extremely hot state, quarks and gluons, normally locked inside protons and neutrons, move freely.

What they work on

  1. Measure how jet energy loss in quark-gluon plasma depends on temperature, density and path length, using dijet momentum imbalance and jet v2 from STAR and sPHENIX at RHIC.
  2. Compare jet quenching across collision systems including p+p, Au+Au, Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr and possibly O+O, using Event Shape and Jet Geometry Engineering to isolate geometric effects.
  3. Apply AI-driven techniques to separate the intrinsic jet signal from background and medium response, improving precision of dijet and v2 measurements.
  4. Cross-calibrate global event properties between STAR and sPHENIX using the group's Event Plane Detectors, and continue their calibration and data production.

More about the research

Smashing atomic nuclei together at nearly the speed of light recreates tiny droplets of this plasma. Studying it tests quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of the strong nuclear force.

Why it matters

This is fundamental physics research. It could sharpen understanding of the strong nuclear force and of matter in the early universe. The AI-based background subtraction and the cross-calibrated detector methods are intended to make jet measurements more precise. They also lay groundwork for jet studies at the future Electron-Ion Collider.
