Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common lifelong physical disability. People with CP now live longer, but adults with CP face a sharp drop in healthcare support after childhood.

What they work on
- Explore with qualitative methods what primary care providers need from CPC2U, an online health tool for adults with cerebral palsy, and what affects its use in practice.
- Adapt an online health tool first built for Down syndrome into CPC2U through human-centered design, so it promotes appropriate preventive care for adults with cerebral palsy.
- Pilot CPC2U in the primary care setting to assess whether patients and providers find it acceptable and whether it is feasible to use.
More about the research
They develop many chronic conditions at younger ages than the general population. Many of these conditions could be caught early through primary care and preventive screening. Yet people with disabilities receive fewer preventive services, and some doctors feel unprepared to treat them. An online health tool for people with Down syndrome improved how well care followed guidelines, and patients and providers were satisfied with it. This project proposes to adapt that tool for adults with CP. The new version is called Cerebral Palsy Clinic to You (CPC2U).
Why it matters
Adults with cerebral palsy often miss preventive screening for chronic conditions that appear early in this group. A tailored online tool could help patients and primary care providers follow preventive-care guidelines, supporting earlier detection and treatment. The community-involved design approach could also serve as a model for building care tools for people with other lifelong disabilities.
