What they work on
- Measure unsteady drag and heat transfer on single particles suddenly accelerated in a shock tube, using particle motion and temperature measurements to evaluate existing models.
- Map particle-surface collision outcomes onto a regime map of dimensionless temperature and kinetic energy, using ultra-high-speed imaging of particle impacts on a solid surface.
- Validate the regime map and test whether fluid injected into the surface boundary layer reduces damage, using a multiphase hot cascade with particle-laden flow over an airfoil.
More about the research
Sometimes it is harmful, as when dust erodes or builds up on jet engines, wind turbines and spacecraft. Predicting the outcome is hard because scientists do not fully understand how the gas transfers momentum and heat to the particles before they strike. The project aims to link that gas-particle exchange to what happens at impact, and then use the link to protect surfaces.
Why it matters
Better understanding of how particle-laden gas strikes surfaces could help reduce erosion and deposit buildup in aircraft engines, wind turbines and spacecraft operating in dusty air. A fluidic injection scheme could protect these surfaces, and the same knowledge could improve spray coating and cold spray additive manufacturing.
