Grants

What they work on

  1. Model and fabricate fractional-order electronic components, whose behavior follows non-integer-order equations, and validate them experimentally.
  2. Design new signal-processing circuits built from fractional-order components, using simulation, fabrication and testing.
  3. Apply fractional-order electrical models to characterize crops and liquids for food-safety analysis.
  4. Train University of Alabama undergraduates through 12-week research placements at Brno University of Technology in Czechia.

More about the research

This lets them capture behavior that ordinary parts cannot, such as the electrical response of biological tissue and liquids. Learning to model, build and use such components could expand what circuits can do in signal processing and in measurement. This award trains U.S. undergraduates to research these components as the semiconductor and microelectronics industry grows.

Why it matters

The program prepares engineers for the growing U.S. semiconductor and microelectronics workforce. Its research could advance fractional-order components for signal processing. It could also produce electrical measurement models that help assess crops and liquids for food safety.
