How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect people living with HIV? Early studies suggest they may be somewhat more likely to catch COVID-19 and to become seriously ill.

What they work on
- Assess how HIV status relates to COVID-19 hospitalization and post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (lasting after-effects), using Medicaid claims from 27 states and Washington, DC.
- Measure how the COVID-19 pandemic changed HIV prevention and care, including PrEP prescriptions, HIV testing, care visits, viral load tests and antiretroviral medication possession, before, during and after the acute pandemic.
- Evaluate pandemic effects on non-HIV care for people with HIV, such as wellness visits, preventive screenings and condition management, comparing by geography, community social determinants of health, COVID-19 severity and policies.
More about the research
Outcomes seem worse when HIV is not kept under control by medication. Yet the evidence is mixed. Meanwhile, the pandemic disrupted HIV testing, prevention and treatment services, and it is unclear whether these disruptions have lasting effects.
Why it matters
Findings could help health officials and clinics target efforts to improve care for people living with HIV. They could show which places and groups saw the largest drops in HIV testing, prevention and treatment during the pandemic, and whether those gaps persisted. The data include all states and counties prioritized in efforts to end the HIV epidemic.
