Cancer clinical trials only produce trustworthy answers when the paperwork, consent, data collection, safety reporting and regulatory oversight behind them are handled consistently. This work is the central management and oversight function for cancer clinical trials at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, carried out through its Clinical Trials Support Office.

What they work on

  1. Provide centralized oversight, management and reporting for all cancer clinical trials at the cancer center, covering investigator-initiated, NCI network and industry-sponsored studies.
  2. Supply shared study-management resources and a dedicated quality unit delivering quality control and assurance, and shorten the time from protocol concept to trial activation and completion for investigator-initiated trials.
  3. Hire, train and retain qualified clinical research staff, with professional growth pathways and continuing education for staff and investigators on safe, ethical trial conduct.
  4. Integrate community outreach and engagement with the trials office to raise awareness of clinical research and increase trial participation across age groups, sexes and populations historically less represented in the catchment area.

More about the research

The portfolio spans trials designed and launched by the center's own investigators, trials run through national networks sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, including the National Clinical Trials Network and the Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network, and trials sponsored by industry. The stated commitment is to high-quality trials with broad and fair access across the surrounding region the center serves.

Why it matters

Patients with cancer can only access experimental treatments if trials are opened quickly, run safely and documented to regulatory standards. Strengthening central trial management shortens start-up times, improves data quality, and supports trials designed locally by cancer center investigators. Linking the trials office to community outreach is intended to widen participation among groups historically less represented in cancer research, so results better reflect the patients who will receive the treatments.
