Rowan University, NJ·Engineering
The United States has more than 600,000 bridges, and each must be inspected every two years. Inspections still depend mostly on visual checks, a few measurements and inconsistent records.

What they work on
- Assess the translation potential of a LiDAR-based bridge inspection platform through industry interviews with transportation agencies, engineering firms and asset managers.
- Automatically identify and classify bridge components in 3D LiDAR point clouds and color images, using transformer-based semantic segmentation and geometry-aware classification.
- Detect deflection, settlement, section loss and surface deterioration by comparing point clouds across inspection cycles to build digital baselines.
More about the research
This makes it hard to track slow deterioration or spot subtle structural changes. Overestimating damage leads to unnecessary repairs, while underestimating it raises safety risks. This project looks at whether a LiDAR-based inspection technology is ready to move from the lab into practice. LiDAR, Light Detection and Ranging, maps surfaces with laser pulses.
Why it matters
More objective, repeatable bridge inspection data could help transportation agencies, engineering firms and infrastructure asset managers. It could help them catch deterioration earlier and avoid unnecessary repairs, which may improve bridge safety and lower maintenance costs across aging U.S. infrastructure.
Known grants
