Kerry Burnstein
University of Miami, FL·Education Research
Training the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians requires more than individual mentors; it requires coordinated programs that carry people from undergraduate curiosity through faculty independence. This grant supports the Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) component of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center serving South Florida, and the PI directs it as Associate Director for Education and Training.

What they work on
- Provide stage-specific scientific and professional development programs that advance cancer research careers for undergraduates, graduate trainees, postdoctoral associates, faculty and non-faculty healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate center-wide training and education programs so that basic, clinical, translational and population-based cancer researchers collaborate across disciplines.
- Align trainee and faculty cancer research with the cancer burden and priorities of the center's South Florida catchment area, working with the Office of Outreach and Engagement.
- Track training outcomes and evaluate programs using a database of more than 4,000 current and former trainees, and support faculty in renewing and obtaining training and career development grants such as NCI R25 and T32 awards.
More about the research
CRTEC has two stated aims. The first is to offer cancer research career enhancement across the full span of students, trainees, faculty and non-faculty healthcare professionals, through scientific and professional development programs tailored to each career stage. The second is to coordinate center-wide training and education so that basic laboratory, clinical, translational and population-based cancer research groups work together rather than separately. The component is guided by center leadership, an External Advisory Board and a Cancer Education Leadership Council, and it works with the center's Office of Outreach and Engagement so that the cancer burden and priorities of the surrounding catchment area shape what trainees and faculty study. CRTEC maintains a database of more than 4,000 current and former trainees used for tracking outcomes, planning activities and evaluating programs. The abstract reports growth during the reporting period: annual institutional investment of $1.3 million in education and training, an increase in cancer-relevant peer-reviewed funding from $1.2 million to $4.1 million in annual direct costs, growth in career development (K) awards from five to 12 and fellowship (F) awards from seven to 25, plus new training grants including an NCI R25 supporting undergraduate cancer research and career development and an NCI T32 for postdoctoral associates focused on reducing burden across the cancer control continuum.
Why it matters
Cancer care and cancer research in South Florida depend on a steady supply of trained investigators and clinicians who understand the region's specific cancer burden. By coordinating training from the undergraduate level through faculty careers and linking it to community outreach priorities, this work aims to build a workforce whose research addresses the cancers most affecting the population the center serves.
