Asthma, a chronic disease of the airways, affects 21 million US adults, and Black and Latinx adults carry a disproportionate share of its burden. Part of the reason lies in social determinants of health (SDOH), the conditions people live in.

What they work on
- Determine whether Black and Latinx adults with moderate-to-severe asthma have distinct SDOH exposomes, sets of social and environmental exposures, that link to worse asthma, using PREPARE trial data with geocoded SDOH measures.
- Test whether African American adults experience more asthma-related illness than non-African American Black adults, using prospective monthly survey outcomes from the PREPARE study.
- Identify baseline SDOH exposomes and clinical traits that predict which patients respond best to PARTICS, a strategy of taking an inhaled corticosteroid with each rescue inhaler use.
More about the research
These have five parts: economic stability, education, health care access, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context. Efforts to close the gap have mostly failed, partly because the links between SDOH and asthma in Black and Latinx adults are poorly understood. Most past studies involved children or relied on limited or one-time data.
Why it matters
Identifying the specific social and environmental exposures behind worse asthma in Black and Latinx adults could guide targeted policies and interventions. Knowing who benefits most from the PARTICS inhaler strategy could also help put it into practice. Both could reduce asthma attacks and related illness in these heavily affected communities.
