Citizens increasingly need to make sense of data, and middle and high schools are adding more data science and statistics (DS&S) to their math courses. But programs that train future secondary math teachers often give DS&S little attention compared with other branches of mathematics.

What they work on
- Examine how well undergraduate programs prepare teachers for data science and statistics, using surveys and classroom observations of early-career mathematics teachers.
- Identify problems of practice in DS&S preparation within mathematics teacher education programs through a survey and interview study of those programs.
- Build and sustain a networked improvement community for DS&S teacher education through partnerships with national organizations and projects and faculty learning opportunities, guided by improvement science.
- Develop, curate and share DS&S teacher education curriculum materials, and expand the CODAP data analysis platform's tools for working with data, simulation and modeling.
More about the research
As a result, new teachers can lack both the content knowledge and the confidence to teach statistics topics.
Why it matters
Better teacher preparation in data science and statistics could help K-12 students become the data-literate citizens society increasingly needs. Future math teachers would benefit from stronger content knowledge and confidence. Faculty at a broad range of colleges could gain shared curriculum materials and improved CODAP tools to use in their courses.
