Chronic pediatric uveitis is a rare form of long-lasting inflammation inside the eye in children. Without proper care, it can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, retinal damage and even blindness.

What they work on
- Identify barriers to and helpful factors in chronic pediatric uveitis care through focus groups with caregivers, clinicians and community partners.
- Develop a multidisciplinary telemedicine care model linking pediatric ophthalmologists, uveitis specialists, rheumatologists and psychosocial support, through Community Engagement Studios with the Community Advisory Group.
- Test the feasibility of the telemedicine model, in which local technicians collect health data and eye imaging for specialists who review them remotely.
More about the research
Managing it requires several specialists, including pediatric eye doctors and pediatric rheumatologists, who treat inflammatory and joint diseases. Young children often cannot describe their symptoms, which delays diagnosis. Uveitis specialists are scarce, so families, especially in remote or low-income areas, may have to travel long distances for care.
Why it matters
Children with chronic uveitis risk vision loss when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Families far from specialists or with limited resources face the greatest barriers. A scalable, culturally relevant telemedicine model could help these children get timely monitoring and treatment, and it could provide psychosocial support to them and their families regardless of where they live.
