Rare neurogenetic conditions are genetic disorders that affect brain development, and very little is known about how affected children develop in their earliest years. That knowledge is needed to set standards of care, find treatment targets and design support programs.

What they work on
- Deploy PANDABox, a caregiver-administered at-home telehealth assessment, in a large longitudinal cohort of 6- to 42-month-old children with and without rare neurogenetic conditions to build a natural-history dataset.
- Identify reliable, valid and feasible clinical, behavioral and physiological measures, such as heart activity and vocal patterns, that distinguish early developmental profiles across neurogenetic syndromes.
- Determine which early PANDABox measures predict variability in community-prioritized clinical outcomes in young children with neurogenetic conditions.
More about the research
Standard developmental tests often do not work for young children with severe movement, sensory or cognitive impairments, or for families who live far from specialty clinics.
Why it matters
Young children with rare neurogenetic conditions, especially those with severe impairments or living far from specialty centers, often go without reliable developmental monitoring. Accessible at-home telehealth measures could improve developmental surveillance for these children and help set standards of care, treatment targets and support programs for them and their families.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
