Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause about 5% of all human cancers. These include nearly all cervical cancers and about a quarter of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), cancers of the lining of the mouth and throat.

What they work on
- Define how the chemokine CXCL14 increases MHC-I antigen presentation, which lets immune cells recognize tumor cells, to suppress HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
- Determine how CXCL14 draws CD8+ killer T cells into HPV-positive tumors and activates them, using syngeneic mice with intact immune systems.
- Test CXCL14-based immunotherapies for their ability to induce anti-tumor immunity and clear HPV-positive head and neck tumors in mouse models.
More about the research
HPV-positive head and neck cancers have risen sharply in recent decades. Yet little is known about how HPV drives these cancers forward while avoiding the immune system.
Why it matters
HPV-positive head and neck cancer is rising sharply, and many patients do not respond to current immunotherapies. Showing how CXCL14 helps the immune system find and attack these tumors could lead to a new immunotherapy approach for head and neck cancer patients, particularly those who do not respond to existing treatments.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
