What they work on
- Build an in-network cyberattack detection system for power-grid communication networks that uses programmable data planes for high-speed, customizable packet inspection.
- Develop a self-healing system that automatically restores network connectivity and recovers corrupted grid measurements, using properties of both the communication network and the physical devices.
- Design an in-network traffic scheduler that disrupts attackers' reconnaissance scanning while still meeting the grid's quality-of-service requirements.
More about the research
The networks that today's grids use limit how well security measures can perform. Meanwhile, Internet companies are moving to programmable networks, in which the 'data plane,' the hardware that forwards data packets, can be custom-programmed to process traffic as it passes. This collaborative project brings that programmability into power-grid networks to build security directly into the network, an approach called in-network security. The goal is to detect, mitigate and prevent attacks.
Why it matters
Cyberattacks on power grids can disrupt electricity supply for homes, hospitals and industry. Programmable network defenses could help grid operators detect intrusions faster and recover corrupted measurements. They could also hinder attacker reconnaissance, giving utilities a layered way to protect energy systems.
