Grants

What they work on

  1. Develop reconfigurable radio hardware and CAP-MIMO antenna designs, whose sub-apertures can be split between tasks, so one system can sense surroundings and communicate at once in the INSTINCT system.
  2. Design multi-dimensional waveforms and electromagnetics-informed channel models in the wavenumber-delay-Doppler domain, and analyze how synchronization errors, hardware flaws and multi-user interference affect sensing and communication.
  3. Build domain-informed neural networks that jointly design antenna beams for communication and radar sensing, plus a learning-based framework for dynamically sharing radio spectrum.
  4. Formulate computing frameworks for cloud virtual machines that differ in speed and storage and can be preempted on short notice, and use combinatorial and information-theoretic tools to find fundamental tradeoffs for coded and uncoded storage.
  5. Design low-complexity, secure elastic computing algorithms and evaluate them on Amazon EC2 against existing solutions.
  6. Design optimal coded caching schemes that let users retrieve the output of a function of remote data, such as a bilinear query, while keeping the requested function private.
  7. Devise server-private function retrieval strategies for settings where users also send data, overcome complexity bottlenecks, and test the codes on Amazon EC2 and the POWDER 5G platform.
  8. Build UnionLabs, a federation hosted on AWS that links wireless and IoT testbeds at four universities through edge computing and a single web interface, with standard interfaces so new testbeds can join.

More about the research

This research looks for designs that use these resources efficiently while staying reliable and private. The work combines information theory, the mathematics of how much data can be sent or stored, with algorithm design and tests on real platforms. Four projects apply this approach to different settings: a radio system that both senses and communicates, computing on cheap but unreliable cloud machines, private queries on distributed databases, and a shared network of wireless testbeds.

Why it matters

This work could make wireless networks better at sensing their surroundings while carrying data, which matters for autonomous vehicles, smart cities and industrial automation. It could also lower the cost of large computing jobs run on cheap, preemptible cloud machines, and protect user privacy when querying remote databases. In addition, it could give researchers nationwide remote access to wireless testbeds for testing 5G and Internet of Things systems.
