What they work on
- Refine LiveWell, an 8-session videoconference adaptation of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Training, using patient exit interviews, an advisory board, the Dynamic Sustainability Framework and user testing with 10 patients with metastatic lung cancer.
- Test whether a randomized pilot trial of LiveWell versus enhanced usual care is feasible, measuring enrollment of 80 distressed patients at two cancer centers, adherence to sessions and assessments, and satisfaction.
- Look for early signs that LiveWell improves quality of life and reduces depression, anxiety, illness non-acceptance, fatigue, breathlessness and pain from baseline to post-treatment, compared with enhanced usual care.
- Explore whether improved emotion regulation explains how LiveWell helps patients with metastatic lung cancer.
More about the research
Most will still die of their cancer, so they must manage living while facing death. Many experience anxiety, depression, trouble accepting their illness, fatigue, breathlessness and pain, along with a poor quality of life. Existing counseling approaches were not built for this situation.
Why it matters
People living with metastatic lung cancer face heavy emotional and physical burdens, and few counseling programs are designed for them. If LiveWell proves feasible and helpful, it could give these patients a remote, skills-based way to improve their quality of life. The same approach may also be adapted for people with other metastatic cancers and chronic illnesses.
