A stem cell transplant from a donor can cure blood cancers. However, more than half of long-term survivors develop chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), in which the donor's immune cells attack the patient's own organs.

What they work on
- Test in a randomized trial of 350 patients with chronic graft-versus-host disease whether the HORIZONS group telehealth program improves quality of life and psychological distress more than minimally enhanced usual care.
- Measure whether HORIZONS reduces cGVHD symptom burden and improves coping and self-efficacy among stem cell transplant survivors recruited from two academic centers and a national advocacy group.
- Identify factors that help or block the adoption of HORIZONS in practice, using the RE-AIM QuEST mixed-methods implementation framework.
More about the research
This causes painful, disruptive symptoms and is a major cause of illness and death after transplant. Very few studies have tested ways to help survivors cope. Weakened immunity, heavy symptoms, and long distances from transplant centers make in-person care hard to provide.
Why it matters
Adults who survive stem cell transplants for blood cancers but develop chronic graft-versus-host disease often lack support for managing a painful, multi-organ condition, especially when they live far from transplant centers. A remote group program, if effective, could improve their quality of life and emotional well-being. It could also make survivorship care available across regions and care settings.
