Ileana Mauldin

University of Virginia, VA·Medicine & Clinical Research

Testing a new cancer drug or diagnostic requires good experimental systems, such as mouse models of cancer and tumor samples taken from patients. It also takes specialized instruments and people who know how to use them.

Grants
1 known grant, through Jan 2027

What they work on

  1. Provide cancer researchers with animal models of cancer and human-derived materials, along with expert help in planning, running and analyzing studies of investigational diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
  2. Expand and maintain a collection of patient-derived xenografts (PDX), human tumors grown in mice, for preclinical cancer studies.
  3. Generate conditional knockout and knock-in mice, in which genes can be deleted or modified in specific tissues, using CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing in place of traditional gene targeting.
  4. Coordinate with other cancer center cores, including flow cytometry, microscopy, biostatistics and the tissue biorepository, to support linked preclinical and clinical studies.

More about the research

This grant supports Molecular and Immunological Translational Sciences (MITS), a shared core facility at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. MITS helps cancer researchers judge whether investigational agents work for diagnosing or treating cancer. It is not a single research project with its own hypothesis.

Why it matters

By providing mouse cancer models, patient-derived tumor grafts, genetically engineered mice and shared instruments at subsidized cost, the facility helps cancer center researchers test whether experimental agents could improve cancer diagnosis or treatment. These shared resources may speed the move from laboratory findings to preclinical and clinical studies.

Known grants

Luis Parada

Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis, IN·Medicine & Clinical Research

Test whether NF1-mutant glioblastomas have distinct tumor cell properties and immune microenvironments, using engineered mice lacking NF1, Tp53 and Pten compared with NF1-normal QKi/Tp53/Pten mice.
