Cancer research depends on access to real patient tissue, but well-documented samples are scarce for the populations that carry a higher cancer burden. This core facility serves the Florida-California Cancer Research, Education and Engagement (CaRE2) Health Center.

What they work on
- Expand the center's physical and virtual biorepositories into a single access point for diverse, well-annotated tumor specimens from Florida and California patient populations.
- Acquire living tumor tissue and develop patient-derived xenografts, human tumors grown in mice, to speed drug development and test how drug response varies with patient background.
- Supply pancreatic and prostate cancer tissue blocks and plasma and serum samples to the CaRE2 center's research projects, and transfer drug-development methods to FAMU.
More about the research
It builds and shares a collection of preserved and living tumor tissues so that the center's investigators can study cancer differences across patient groups and develop new drugs.
Why it matters
Many patient groups with a higher cancer burden are underrepresented in tissue banks and genomic data. Expanding biospecimen collections and patient-derived tumor models from these groups could help researchers learn why cancers such as pancreatic and prostate cancer differ between populations. It could also help test drugs on tumors that better reflect the patients who need them.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
