What they work on
- Adapt an existing framework to describe structural, functional, normative, interpersonal and process integration in post-acute and hospice care for cancer patients, and identify how each could improve care.
- Measure care integration through case studies, clinician interviews and surveys of a random sample of post-acute and hospice facilities, and determine how relationships among integration types vary with agency and market factors.
- Use Medicare administrative data to test how integration relates to readmissions, spending, complications and patient and family experiences for cancer patients, including low-income and rural subgroups.
More about the research
Care across these settings is often fragmented. Meanwhile, ownership has consolidated, including a sharp rise in for-profit chains and ties to hospitals and health systems. It is unclear whether this structural integration helps cancer patients or harms them.
Why it matters
Findings could help clinicians, cancer care leaders and policymakers identify which kinds of integration actually improve care for patients with cancer in skilled nursing, rehabilitation, home health and hospice settings. They could also show where consolidation may worsen care. This could guide efforts toward higher-quality care, including for low-income and rural patients.
