Many cancer cases and deaths could be avoided through prevention, earlier detection and better care after diagnosis. Population science studies these questions across whole communities rather than single patients.

cancer control
cancer survivorship
cancer prevention
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Mar 2030
What they work on
- Identify risk and protective factors for cancer and test strategies to reduce cancer risk in the population, drawing on epidemiology, genomics and epigenetics, with a focus on Los Angeles County.
- Study and promote early cancer detection and increase screening uptake using smarter screening strategies and screening trials in clinical and community settings.
- Reduce avoidable illness and death among cancer patients and long-term survivors through behavioral intervention trials, implementation science and observational studies.
More about the research
The Cancer Control and Survivorship (CCS) Research Program at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center is the home for this work. Its goal is to reduce avoidable cancer burden at the population level. It covers the full cancer control continuum, from prevention through end-of-life care, with a focus on Los Angeles County.
Why it matters
Residents of Los Angeles County, especially high-risk groups, could benefit from better ways to lower cancer risk, raise screening rates and support survivors. Findings on risk factors such as tobacco, obesity and the environment, and on how to deliver screening and care, could guide cancer care and inform health policy.
