University of Virginia, VA·Public Health & Epidemiology
Cancer does not strike all communities equally. Where people live, how much money they have, and how they behave all shape who develops cancer and who survives it.
- Fields
Public Health & Epidemiology
Medicine & Clinical Research
- Topics
cancer epidemiology
cancer etiology
cancer health disparities
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Jan 2027
What they work on
- Identify how biological, behavioral and socioeconomic factors combine to drive differences in cancer risk and outcomes among populations in the largely rural University of Virginia Cancer Center region.
- Develop new interventions and conduct implementation research, which tests how to deliver proven approaches in real communities, to reduce cancer risk and disparities in varied populations.
- Find new risk factors and test behavioral risk-reduction approaches for tobacco- and obesity-related cancers, especially lung and colorectal cancer.
More about the research
This work aims to explain these gaps and to design programs that close them, with a focus on the largely rural region served by the University of Virginia Cancer Center.
Why it matters
Rural and low-income communities often carry a heavier cancer burden. By identifying what raises cancer risk in these groups and testing ways to improve prevention, screening access and healthy behaviors, this work could help reduce rates and improve outcomes for tobacco- and obesity-related cancers, especially lung and colorectal cancer, across the University of Virginia Cancer Center region and beyond.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
