Dolores Guest

University of New Mexico, NM·Public Health & Epidemiology

Cancer research that involves people, rather than cells or mice, depends on carefully built questionnaires, interviews, and databases: how a question is worded, how participants are recruited and tracked, and how interview transcripts are coded all shape what a study can conclude. Supplying that methodological backbone is the job of the Behavioral Measurement and Population Science Shared Resource at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center, for which this grant provides support and which Dolores Guest serves as Associate Director.

What they work on

  1. Provide research design and development support to cancer center investigators conducting basic and translational cancer research involving human participants.
  2. Deliver data collection and data management services, together with qualitative data analysis of interview and open-ended text material, for cancer-focused population science projects.
  3. Facilitate accrual reporting so investigators can track and document enrollment of participants into cancer studies.
  4. Train cancer center members and outside users in behavioral measurement and population science methods, and develop new methodologies with the center's research programs.
  5. Disseminate new population science technologies and methods through a maintained web page and library and through presentations at cancer center meetings and retreats.

More about the research

The resource offers a continuum of services to cancer center members and outside users across basic and translational cancer research: help designing and developing studies, collecting and managing data, analyzing qualitative data such as interview and open-ended text material, facilitating reporting on participant accrual to studies, and training investigators in these methods. It is run by full-time staff that includes experienced researchers from the cancer center's Cancer Control and Population Science program, with the cancer center's research administration handling fiscal management, hiring, purchasing of supplies and equipment, and travel; resource leadership tracks projects, usage and billing. Staff work directly with the cancer center's research programs to develop new methodologies for population science, and disseminate information about new population science technologies through a maintained web page and library and through presentations at cancer center meetings and retreats. Over the previous five-year period the resource supported 44 projects for 22 principal investigators, including 16 peer-reviewed grant-funded projects, 20 peer-reviewed cancer center pilot projects, and 8 supplement-funded studies.

Why it matters

Studies of cancer prevention, screening, treatment experience, and survivorship only yield trustworthy answers if their measurement and data handling are sound. By supplying study design, data collection and management, qualitative analysis, accrual reporting, and methods training to investigators at a comprehensive cancer center serving New Mexico, this resource supports research whose findings could shape cancer control efforts in the communities those investigators study.
