How do people work, learn and build trust when new technology changes their roles? The two projects explore this question in very different settings.

What they work on
- Design examination cockpits and working methods that let a remote physician guide a nurse wearing touch-sensing gloves through an ear, nose and throat exam, using an iterative design-build-test testbed.
- Evaluate how remote touch-based exams affect perceptual and social understanding, mental workload and technology acceptance among physicians, nurses and patients, and develop new workflows and training.
- Test whether a 2-year integrated Career and Technical Education course in 3D fabrication, microcontroller electronics and programming builds technology literacy, career readiness and growth mindset in high school students.
- Examine how STEM identity forms among Latinx and African American high school students in the course, using questionnaires, video analysis and interviews compared with students outside the course.
More about the research
One looks at doctors and nurses performing physical exams over a distance through touch technology. The other looks at high school students learning several technologies at once to prepare for future jobs. Both are large collaborations that bring together engineers, psychologists, clinicians and educators.
Why it matters
Remote touch-based exams could give elderly and rural patients, and people during infectious disease outbreaks, access to real physical exams and specialists without traveling to a hospital. The education project offers a shareable curriculum, posted online, and evidence on how to prepare students from underrepresented, low-income communities for multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing careers.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
